EXCERPT:

Felix’s muscles seized, though not from fear of demons nor the fright of never seeing his father again. Jesus was leaving. The man who had saved him from his possessed father, and who had saved his father from the demons, strode toward the sea.

Felix kissed his father’s cheek. “I will return.” He raced to the shore.

Jesus chatted with some of his friends near their boat. It wasn’t too late.

“Jesus!” He scrambled closer and threw his arms around the Teacher’s waist.

Jesus embraced him as if the squeeze of Felix’s arms wasn’t an intrusion.

“Thank you for healing my father.”

He let go of the man and stepped back, meeting Jesus’s gaze. A gaze that would live in his dreams forever.

“I believe it. I believe you are the Son of the Most High God.”

Jesus smiled as if Felix was a loyal friend. Not someone he had met hours before, but as if he had known him all of his life.

He would treasure Jesus’s broad smile. The smile of the only God who had restored his family and given him a reason to hope.

MY REVIEW:

A unique devotional inspired by the author's trip to the Sea of Galilee in Israel . . .

Author Barbara M. Britton has provided readers with an in-depth study of New Testament Scriptures from the Gospel of Mark regarding Jesus's travels around the Sea of Galilee to minister to people from all walks of life.

The author has written fictionalized versions of events taken from the Book of Mark by giving names to previously anonymous characters to illustrate how their interactions with Jesus greatly affected their lives.

The book is divided into six parts, each of which contains four or five fictionalized vignettes of the scripture passages being examined for that section. The vignettes are followed by the Author's Reflections and a detailed section of Discussion Questions. The formatting of the book is user-friendly and allows readers to record their thoughts in the book.

At the end of the book the author has thoughtfully provided a brief section entitled, 'Following Jesus.' I found the tone of the author in this section to be warm and encouraging because it gives new Christians specific ways to continue to grow in their journey of faith.

I received a copy of this book from the author through JustRead Publicity Tours. All of my thoughts and opinions shared here are solely my own.

Honoring a family vow…

He never expected love

When veterinarian Hank Hopson returns to Three Springs, Texas, with his five-year-old son, he’s determined to honor his wife’s last wish to heal family wounds. Taking a job at the local animal hospital, he’s paired with Gwen Bayer, the spitfire cowgirl working as his vet tech. She plans to get back on the rodeo circuit once her horse’s injury heals, and he’s headed for the city. But as their friendship deepens, it becomes impossible to deny their growing connection. How will they decide between the lives they’ve worked for—and the love that could change everything?

EXCERPT:

Gwen climbed over the center console and sat in the passenger seat.

“That was rather efficient.” He chuckled, then adjusted the driver’s seat for his tall frame and got in. With the side mirrors positioned to his liking, he set the truck in reverse and then glanced at Gwen and said, “Feel free to time me.” His drawl was low, rich, and a beat shy of devil-may-care.

Just like that, another unfortunate truth landed like a bug against the windshield. Gwen liked her cowboy neighbor up close even better. But no cowboy, steely-eyed or otherwise, made her pulse hopscotch out ofbounds. At least not in years. And not until now. Clearly her return home had her more out of sorts than she realized. Gwen frowned.

“There a problem?” he asked.

“Just realized we should have placed a wager,” she mused. “I could use an easy win.”

“It’s not too late.” One corner of his mouth lifted and hinted that there was much more beneath his brooding exterior.

And now she was intrigued. Bad thing that. Gwen had one priority—healing her injured horse and getting back to competing on the rodeo circuit, not making connections new or old. She eyed him. “What are you willing to lose?”

His laughter was instant and sharp. “I can’t recall the last time I lost a bet.”

Gwen couldn’t recall the last time a cowboy caught her interest so thoroughly. She hummed before responding. “Sounds like you are afraid you’re going to lose.”

“Coffee,” he said. At her raised eyebrow, he added, “The loser gets the winner coffee in the morning.”

Another run-in with her neighbor. Her pulse did that uncharacteristic hopscotch thing all over again. “Deal,” she said and pulled out her phone, opened her stopwatch app and counted him down.

MY REVIEW:

Missteps from the past, regrets, and unclear dreams for the future cause cowgirl Gwen Bayer and veterinarian Hank Hopson to hesitate about beginning a serious relationship with each other . . .

I've read several of this author's previous books and they are all sprinkled with humorous characters and their witty antics. This story, with the addition of an active, curious five-year-old named Henry Hopson is downright funny at times!

Gwen Bayer is a rodeo cowgirl who has had a lot of success on the rodeo circuit in the past. Now she has to take a pause because her horse has suffered a serious injury. She's looking for a place to think things out so she returns to Three Springs, Texas, to spend some time with her wise granddad and work as a veterinary tech in the town's veterinary center.

Veterinarian Hank Hopson has returned to Three Springs to heal some wounds with his large family. Hank is hired to temporarily work at the town's veterinary center, also. After losing his wife a few years earlier, he's decided to be the best parent he can to his young son by focusing on Henry as he grows and learns.

I love stories where characters experience a lot of personal growth; and that is exactly what happens to Gwen and Hank as individuals. They both accept their shortcomings and make goals to change past behaviors and release negative thoughts to open themselves up for a more joy-filled, positive future.

This book is completely clean in language and content. I received a copy of this book from the author through JustRead Publicity Tours. All of my thoughts and opinions shared here are solely my own.

EXCERPT:

Grandpa rearranged clothes to fit the elvish box into the suitcase puzzle. “If you’re going to ask, then don’t.”

Will nodded. “Why?”

“Don’t want to talk about it.”

“Did you make the box? It’s really cool.”

“Nope.”

“Who did?”

Grandpa cleared his throat. “An old friend.”

“Who?”

Grandpa cleared his throat again, more forcefully. “Why do you ask so many questions?” Silence filled the air until it felt ready to explode. “George. George Gates.” He zipped up the suitcase.

“He must’ve liked Lord of the Rings a lot.”

Grandpa nodded. “He loved to read… and write. Writing was his stress reliever.”

“Too bad all the writing on the box didn’t mean anything.”

Grandpa’s eyes flashed. “Not George. Of course it means something. Everything was purposeful with George. I wouldn’t have had any idea—”

“You’re welcome,” Will interrupted. “I mean, on Jess’s behalf, you’re welcome. She’s the Lord of the Rings nerd.”

A small smile tugged at the right side of Grandpa’s lips. “She would’ve liked to know George.”

“Where are you taking the box?”

“Will, I said not to ask.”

“But Grandpa, why in the world would you be going anywhere after we just got here?”

Grandpa grunted and pulled the suitcase off the worktable. “Shut the door and lock it when you leave. Don’t touch my tools.”
