My Review:

This 'Young Readers Edition' of Anxious for Nothing was written for middle-grade students, ages 8-12. In the Introduction the author extends a warm welcome to young readers by stating he is proud of them for seeking an answer to the question, "How do I deal with worry?" (Page xi)

He defines worry as 'letting tomorrow's problems ruin today.' (Page xi) What a simple definition for such a powerful emotion! The author moves on to share Bible verses that deal with worry and anxiety before encouraging readers to seek God's tools for dealing with worry and anxiety. (Page xii)

The book is broken down into four sections; each section contains two or three chapters covering topics such as celebrating God's goodness, asking God for help, staying positive, and thinking about good things.

Each chapter is filled with scripture references, Bible stories, anecdotes from real life, prayers, age-appropriate infographics and sidebars to help readers remember the lessons being taught, and acrostics to give readers a visual way to practice the teaching (i.e., C.A.L.M. in Chapter Eleven.) The back matter includes a touching Closing Note From Max Lucado, Sources, and Resources.

This author's writing tone is very age appropriate, warm, inviting, and encouraging. I found this book to be inspirational for adults, too. I highly recommend this volume to families, church schools, Sunday school teachers, youth group leaders, church libraries, and anyone who is looking for some inspiration in our chaotic and stressful world.

I received a paperback copy of this book from the publisher through JustRead Publicity. My thoughts and opinions shared here are solely my own.

EXCERPT:

KINDNESS --

If I were to ask you to rate your kindness meter on a scale of one to ten, where would you put yourself? I think most of us would determine that we probably fall in the upper mid-range. Statements like, Im a fairly kind person,” or I demonstrate kindness most of the time,” seem to ring true for me. Maybe a seven or eight on the scale, certainly no lower than a six if we call ourselves Christians, right?

If we were graded on a curve, these scores would seem to suffice. But this is not a curve-based system; we are called to do better than that. I am not advocating a performance-based belief system whereby we should be kind to gain points or favor from our God. No. Gods grace through Jesussacrifice is sufficient. What Im getting at is that our response to that grace should be flowering fruit that demonstrates who we are in Christ.

Regardless of the rating you gave yourself in the exercise above, there is room for growth. Lets make kindness a priority. Think of ways that you can demonstrate kindness to those around you, both big and small. Exercise that muscle in your life and lets create a culture where our fruit can ripen.

She jumps at the chance to go to France, where the Allied forces recently landed. There she enlists Jean-Paul Breslau of the French underground to take her to the frontlines. On the journey, they stumble upon a great tragedy, leaving a girl with special needs being orphaned.

Can Nellie and Jean-Paul see the child to a safe haven while being pursued by the Nazis, who are pressed by the advancing Allies and determined to destroy all they can before they flee?

MY REVIEW:

It has been several decades since I was in the targeted age group for this devotional. As an adult, I have worked with junior high/middle school and high school students as a youth group leader, Sunday School teacher, supervisor of high school aides in my classroom, and as an paraprofessional at a high school. As an adult who is interested in the spiritual, mental, and emotional development for this age group, I jumped at the chance to review this book.

I was not disappointed!

This book is beautifully-packaged and will appeal to male and female readers with its black and blue type and unadorned pages of devotions.

Each devotion includes a short title, a Bible verse, message of several paragraphs from the author, and a two to four sentence prayer which applies to the Bible verse and the lesson for the devotion.

Many of the devotions regard peer pressure. Specifically, the negativity that one must navigate through on social media. Even though I did not grow up with social media when I was this age, I can see the pitfalls of this method of communicating.

The author encourages readers to not compare themselves to others in the areas of appearance, wealth, etc. She reassures them that God created them in His image with a plan for their lives. Then she provides examples of how readers can accomplish these goals by focusing instead on God and His purpose and path for their lives.

The author's feeling tone is warm, welcoming, positive, supportive, and encouraging. I believe young readers will respond positively to her youthful writing style.

If I could sum up the message of this book as I see it, I would quote the final sentence from Devotion 25, 'Cool and Confident':

"Be cool and confident in who God has created you to be, and live the life God has called you to live."  Sadie Robertson Huff, author, page 55

I highly recommend this book for readers ages 13 to 16, families, church libraries, Sunday School/youth group leaders, and for older adults who want to get in touch with their younger selves.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through JustRead Publicity Tours. All of my opinions and thoughts shared here are solely my own.
