JUNE: Welcome to 'Reading, Writing & Stitch-Metic', Kimberley. I'm thrilled to have you as my guest. If I counted correctly, 'MissTaken Identity' will be your third publication this year. Congratulations on having two books and this novella released in 2018!
KIMBERLEY: Thank you so much for having me. It's actually my fourth release this year: Out of the Ashes, The Mayflower Bride, The Patriot Bride, and now this collection. Thank you so much!
JUNE: I apologize for missing 'Out of the Ashes'. I'll have to talk to my 'assistant' (I wish! 😊) about her fact-checking skills and accuracy rate. I may have to replace her with someone more efficient. (Ha!)
JUNE: Please tell us how you created your setting and developed the characters for 'MissTaken Identity'. Since this is an historical story set in 1883 Texas, what types of research did you perform prior to or while working on the story?
KIMBERLEY: I was born in Texas and have lived there several times over the course of my life so I love to incorporate that great state when I can! I spent a lot of time actually at the Texas Rangers Museum in Waco, Texas to do a good deal of the research for this story. It was a lot of fun asking questions and understanding the jobs that the Rangers performed during this time period. My setting for the story actually came from my research into the Rangers and because of the sheep/cattle conflicts that the Rangers had to deal with during these years in a particular county.
JUNE: I love visiting museums to do research for my projects, too. The Texas Rangers Museum sounds unique and interesting.
JUNE: Who is your favorite character in this story? Why is this person your favorite? Without spoiling the story, is there anyone in the story who you do not like? Why not?
KIMBERLEY: Hmmm... my favorite character is 'Chuck' because he/she is a mess. (Aren't we all?) And I love flawed, real characters. The person I dislike is the villain. :)
JUNE: When you write a book, do you outline the entire story, or do you have a different way of organizing your plot, characters, etc.? Do you always know the ending of your story before you begin putting things down on paper or into your computer?
KIMBERLEY: Yes. I outline and write a long synopsis. I hate synopses. BUT, I've learned that writing a synopsis can save your skin many a time while you're writing. I still get to fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants as I'm writing the synopsis. And then as I'm writing, sometimes the characters morph and change as well as the plot, but I have a solid understanding of where I am and where I should be headed that keeps me from getting off track. And I do - I always know the end of the story before I actually start writing the manuscript.
JUNE: Thanks for sharing the long synopsis tip with us. It sounds like a good tool to use when working on a writing project of any length.
JUNE: I have enjoyed reading several of the historical fiction novels you co-wrote with Tracie Peterson. Please share a little bit about how you approach a book you are writing with a partner differently from your approach when you are the solo author. When writing with a partner, do you divide up the duties such as research, writing, editing, etc., or is it a team effort all the way? What do you like about writing with a partner?
KIMBERLEY: Thank you - I'm so glad you've enjoyed them. Tracie and I love writing together. We're in it as a team. The biggest part is the planning/plotting. We spend weeks researching and chatting back and forth about story points and ideas. Then we slowly put those together in emails and color-code things as we go. Then... we write a really long synopsis. It was different than writing with my daughter Kayla - because I wrote the adult POVs in those books and Kayla wrote the teen POVs (since she was 12 &13 y.o. when we wrote those) - it was a wonderful process and we loved writing together. Now - Tracie and I write so well together because we just connect and our styles mesh.
JUNE: Your process when writing with a partner is so interesting to me. Thanks for sharing these helpful details with us.
JUNE: Since we are well into the holiday season, please share some of your family's favorite Christmas traditions, recipes, church activities, decorations, etc., with us.
KIMBERLEY: I'm a Christmas fanatic. I LOVE Christmas. When our kids were growing up, I used to start decorating at the beginning of November because it would take me that long to get it all up and I wanted to enjoy it. I had a Christmas tree and nativity set for every room in the house (including the bathrooms!) But now, I'm simplifying a bit. Since we just moved to Montana and I've had two books due since we moved and another due in a couple months, I'm behind this year :) - but prayerfully, I'll get the tree up soon! (If I can find it!)
As to traditions, we love Christmas music, Christmas movies (good ol' classics like White Christmas, Christmas in Connecticut, Holiday Inn, It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street. Then newer classics like Elf and It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.) We make Christmas cookies and goodies for neighbors and people at church. And we simply spend a LOT of time together as a family always remembering that Jesus is the Reason.
JUNE: It sounds as if Christmastime is a blessed, busy, and fun season around the Woodhouse home! Thank you so much for sharing with us today, Kimberley. Wishing you continued success in your writing and public speaking endeavors.
KIMBERLEY: Thank you again for having me!
