JUNE: Welcome to Reading,
Writing & Stitch-Metic, Leslea. Congratulations on the recent release of
your newest Christian Young Adult Adventurous Mystery, 'eXtreme Blindside'.
JUNE: Please share with us how the idea for this story came to
you. How did you develop the characters and setting? Were the plot, setting, or
any of the characters in this book inspired by events, places, or people from
your own life experiences?
LESLEA: I wrote the first novel
in the Blindside series, Perfect Blindside, years ago, and always hoped to
create more adventures for my lead characters Jake and Sophie. I liked the idea
of having the sequel set at an extreme sporting event, but other than that, I
didn’t know what the story would entail. While the plot marinated in my mind, I
wrote two other YA books, An Unexpected Role and Where You Lead. But finally,
inspiration struck, and the story for eXtreme Blindside started to unfold.
JUNE: You have written several books, novellas, and short stories
in the Young Adult genre. Are there any other genres in which you may
eventually wish to write? If yes, would you ever consider writing
children's literature such as picture books for young children or middle-grade
novels for older children? Any plans to write in the adult genre? Do you have
any interest in writing non-fiction? If yes, what subject would you write
about?
LESLEA: I do have a few children
picture book ideas that I would like to finish someday. In fact, I was working
on two different ones when the premise for my first YA novel suddenly came to
me, and my focus shifted. Every once in a while, I go back to the children's
book ideas, but then inevitably, a YA story pops into my mind that I’m
compelled to work on. I think it’s hard to stay focused on picture books because
creating an entire story with so few words is a real challenge for me. I recently
started working on a new project that will be a departure from my usual YA
genre. It will be my first adult novel—a romantic holiday story.
JUNE: You mentioned on your website that you hope to visit all 50
of the states in the US. Please give us a list of a couple of your favorite
states that you have visited and why they are your favorites. What made these
locales extra-special for you?
LESLEA: What a great question.
There are certain states that immediately come to mind. Utah, Florida, Alaska,
South Carolina, New York, and Pennsylvania. Whether it’s hanging out on a
beach, hiking through canyons, or touring historical sites, all these places
have one common denominator—I visited them with my family. While I would love
to mark all the states off my bucket list, spending time with my family is even
most precious. That is actually the theme of the YA adventure I just finished
working on A Summer to Treasure. It follows one family on a summer road trip
and focuses on sibling relationships.
JUNE: You and your family live in Colorado. Please share some of
your favorite things about living in your home state and how they contribute to
your spiritual and physical health and well-being.
LESLEA: Colorado has so much to
offer for outdoor enthusiasts. I grew up spending time in the mountains and
just love them. My Blindside books are set in the Colorado Rockies as well as
my novella Unlikely Witnesses.
JUNE: I noticed on your website that you enjoy movies, "from
old classics to new releases". Who are a few of your favorite classic
movie leading men and leading ladies? What is your favorite classic Christmas
movie? Please list a few of your favorite movies -- from old classics to new
releases!
LESLEA: Just a few of my
favorite movies – in no particular order.
Some Like it Hot (my favorite Marilyn Monroe movie – so fun!)
Pride and Prejudice (definitely the Keira Knightly version)
National Treasure (who doesn’t love a treasure hunt?)
White Christmas (always gets me in the mood for Christmas)
Die Hard (not sure how but this has become a holiday tradition for our
family)
Freaky Friday (I love watching the Lindsay Lohan version with my
daughter)
Singing in the Rain (such a great classic with amazing songs)
JUNE: 'White Christmas' and
'Singin' in the Rain' are two of my very favorite classic movies, too! Thank
you for chatting with us here today, Leslea! We wish you continued success in
your writing endeavors and much happiness in your family life.
