EXCERPT:

I didn’t beat the rain and got soaked walking from the washed-out drive to the cabin. Coal met me at the door, also drenched and full of disgruntled meows. I wrapped us both in towels and hurried about the cabin placing the few pots, trash cans, bowls, and buckets I could find to hold rain water coming in through the numerous leaks. The electric went out, and I lit the candles scattered throughout the cabin. The warm comfort of their lights filled the room as the dripping water played a solemn melody.

Ting, ta-ting, ting, drip.
Ting, ta-ting, ting, drip.

Coal’s eyes danced as he watched the water fall into the pots. His long tail kept time. I drifted between daydreams and dozing, wondering if Maria Lewandowski was my real mother.
