ABOUT THE BOOK:
It is 1886, and the government has given the US Cavalry control of Yellowstone.
For widowed hotelier Kate Tremaine, the change is a welcome one. She knows
every inch of her wilderness home like the back of her hand and wants to see it
protected from poachers and vandals.
Refused a guide by Congress, Lieutenant William Prescott must enlist Kate's aid
to help him navigate the sprawling park and track down the troublemakers. But a
secret from his past makes him wary of the tender feelings the capable and
comely widow raises in him. As they work together to protect the park and stand
firm through injustice and tragedy, they may just find that two wounded hearts
can share one powerful love when God is in control.
"Set
against the splendid backdrop of Yellowstone National Park, this book will
delight readers with its poignant story of love, hope, and the possibilities of
second chances."

My Thoughts:
This is the first novel I have read by this gifted author, and I enjoyed it immensely.
Yellowstone National Park plays as important a role in the story as any character, and I appreciated how much research the author performed in order to write an accurate portrayal of this magnificent location. I have not have the good fortune to visit this National Park, but I felt like I had visited by the time the story ended because of the author's skills as a storyteller.
The story involves romance, journeys of faith, mystery, and past traumas for both of the main characters. The main characters, widow Kate Tremaine and Calvary Lt. William Prescott, are flawed -- and they know it. They are both portrayed in very realistic terms, and I felt the author did a fine job of giving readers an insider's view of their internal struggles with their individual faith journeys after experiencing personal traumas in their lives.
I appreciated how the author wove wildlife preservation and natural resource preservation into her novel. Readers will learn a lot about the obliteration of the bison population and the careless disregard of some people and business toward the mud pots and geysers which are all natural treasures in this unique place.
Bright spots in the story are Kate's seven-year-old son, Danny, and Alberta, the cook at the Geyser Gateway Inn which is owned by Kate. Danny lights up each scene he is in with his intelligence, curiosity, and enthusiasm. Alberta is renowned for her pie-making abilities, and she is a supportive friend to Kate, too.
The villain in the story is despicable, as he should be. His behavior toward wildlife and humans is disturbing in many instances.
Recommended for fans of Christian historical fiction, Christian historical romance, American history, and lovers of nature.
