A black haze filled the room at an alarming rate. “Charlie!” Lizzie coughed and covered her nose and mouth with the neck of her shirt. She couldn’t see beyond a couple of feet in front of her. “Charlie!”

She lifted her arm to shield her face. The heat rolled off the flames like waves tumbling toward her. She grabbed a kitchen towel, poured the remaining water from her bottle on it, and covered her nose and mouth. She had to find Charlie and get them out before they both died of smoke inhalation or worse—burned to death.
