Title: Finding Her Voice Sawyer was happy that Delilah agreed to go to Sunday school with Tyson, but when she left, memories assaulted him of Tina and himself, with a younger Delilah, sitting in a pew. He had believed in so much then: in the saving power of God, in the sanctity of a marriage he didn’t know would be forced to an end so soon.
Panic tightened his chest and he fought the urge to bolt out of the church. He sat at the end of the pew and Mildred sat beside him. He didn’t want to alarm her or draw attention to himself, so he made himself breathe slowly in and out and stared at the program until the swimming words came into focus.
When his chest stopped stuttering, Sawyer took a moment to scan the congregation, instinctively searching for Bridget. He was in the back, and most of the other attendees were already seated when they’d come in, and she wouldn’t have seen him arrive or known to look for him. He spotted her just as the worship music swelled to joyously greet the morning and the congregation rose in response. She was standing between an older man and woman, who he assumed were her parents. She wore a white-and-purple-flowered sundress with a mauve open-knit shawl and her pretty blond hair spilled down her back like a waterfall of sunbeams.
The sight of her had the paradoxical impact of comforting and unsettling him.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Donna Gartshore lives in Saskatchewan, Canada. Donna now has three books published with Love Inspired and is working on three more. She has also published several short stories and poems with various literary publications and writes devotions.
