"Highly entertaining, refreshing, and witty. . . . [A] beautifully written, delightful, and faith-filled romance of two endearing hearts."

--Grace Hitchcock, award-winning author of My Dear Miss Dupré

Not much happens in Theodosia Stapleton's tiny Northumberland village. Certainly not to her. She has resigned herself to spinsterhood, caring for her ailing mother in the home of her grandfather, known to the locals as "General Contrary." When her dear friend dies and leaves behind a daughter, it's simple enough to take the child into her own quiet world. That is, until her ward's famous uncle unexpectedly arrives and throws Theo's tidy orbit completely off-kilter.

Fame was the last thing Daniel Balfour sought when he fought in the Peninsular War. But his brave exploits caught the attention of the King, and now the honors he was given hound him everywhere . . . even on his rushed trip to rescue his orphaned niece. Theo's quick wit and warm smile reassure him that Rebecca is in good hands, and he finds himself free to swiftly return to London and his responsibilities. But those caring hands are beginning to look like they could also safely hold his heart, and he's tempted to linger. Unfortunately, marriage is simply not in the cards; the army is spouse enough for him.

Then an accident and a scandal lead both Theo and Daniel to discover that their best-laid plans may not have been what God designed for them after all.

EXCERPT:

It seemed there were far too many goodbyes to be had in what felt too close a time.

She thought by now she’d been inured to departures, but with the loss of the captain from their neighborhood and the upcoming loss of Becky’s company, it seemed Theo faced a future infinitely bleaker than she had known. Talk of London, of travel, of a future that had always seemed too remote to even pay heed to, now seemed a little closer, a little more tantalizing. Sometimes she was half-tempted to ask sweet Becky if she would like Theo’s company as a kind of companion. But then the thought of leaving her mother to her grandfather’s ever-volatile moods soon damped down such foolish fancies.

Oh, but how wonderful it would be to have a life beyond these four walls. To dare dream that there might exist a man in this world—whose name was not Frederick—who might wish to share his life with her.

Over the years, she had worked hard to find contentment, so at night she’d pray and ask God to take such desires away, only to wake up each morning with the thoughts still firmly entrenched.

REVIEW:

A Regency-era romance filled with humor, compassion, and hope . . .

Set in 1812 in Northumberland, England, this story will bring fans of this genre a cadre of interesting characters to follow as they weave their way through grief and mishaps on the way to a satisfying conclusion. One of my favorite aspects of this story was that it is filled with subtle humor and quick wit. The main characters don't hesitate to poke fun at society's rigid standards and customs.

The author's 'Regency Wallflowers' series features strong women who have been overlooked by society because of their quirky personality or unusual appearance. In this installment, Theodosia Stapleton, is acting as the lady of Stapleton Court because her mother is infirmed. Her father is deceased, and they live with her dour and demanding grandfather who does not shy away from sharing his opinion about everything that happens in and around his home.

Never married, Theo has given up hope of finding a man who will love her for who she is. She is a compassionate, kind woman who gives of herself to aid others who are grieving their own losses.

This plot is filled with subterfuge, gossip, and interference from meddling members of the community. Several characters seem to siphon all of the oxygen out of the scenes in which they appear and add drama to the plot.

As a fan of historical fiction, I enjoy the author's ability to immerse readers into this time period and setting with her descriptions of fashion, society events, and daily routines around Stapleton Court and in the village.

This story is completely clean in language and content. A strong faith thread runs throughout the story.
