EXCERPT:

Kayla raced outside after Nicolas but couldn’t react quickly enough. The blast caught her off guard, knocking her off the front stoop. She tumbled down the stairs and landed on a patch of brown grass. Her ears rang, and she pressed her hands over them to muffle the sound. She blinked, trying to soothe the sting of tears.

Nicolas! her mind screamed. He’d been close, too close. If he was hurt—or worse… Kayla halted her anxiety-producing theories. She pushed herself back onto her feet. Her vision narrowed in on Nicolas’s large form sprawled on the front lawn. He’d always seemed indestructible to her. Please let him be okay.

The front door swung out, and Detective Reimer sprinted out, barking orders into her cell phone. She skidded to a stop by Kayla. “Are you hurt?”

Kayla shook her head. “No. Nicolas was near the blast.”

“Emergency services are on their way.

Stay here.”   Detective Reimer left Kayla with firm instructions before heading to Nicolas.

Nicolas would be all right. He had to be. The alternative clawed inside her.

REVIEW:

A suspenseful tale filled with many twists and turns . . .

 

From page one to the end of this book Kayla Swartz is tormented by memories of her father and his lifestyle's effect on her life. She is on a continual roller coaster of danger as she is chased down by unknown assailants for a reason she has yet to discover. Her emotions are all over the place as she bounces from one stressful event to another. I admired her perseverance in the face of obstacles coming at her in quick succession.

 

Nicholas Galanis, a bodyguard who owns his own security company, reenters Kayla's life when she returns to their hometown of Snowberry, Montana, at her father's request. Nicholas is a solid guy who remains steadfast to Kayla and her family throughout the story. He is a forgiving person who is willing to take people at their word and give them another chance. I found him to be a three-dimensional man of faith who is filled with courage and fortitude.

 

The couple work together to eventually solve an intricate case involving some surprising villains. The addition of Kayla's mother—Hillary, Kayla's three-year-old half sister—Olive, and Sasha, Kayla's trained therapy dog, brought some rays of sunshine into this dramatic story.

 

This book is completely clean in language and content.
