5 Interesting Behind-the-Scenes Facts
about Bubba and Squirt’s City of Bones
1. Bubba and Squirt’s City of Bones was originally written in past tense. After much thought, I changed it to present tense because I felt it would add to the suspense. Readers can experience the adventure along with Bubba and Squirt without knowing if it’s all going to turn out okay.
2. Paris is a place I’ve visited many times, so naturally, I wanted to use it as a setting in one of my Bubba and Squirt Adventures. The underground catacombs seemed the perfect arrival place for them. Totally creepy!
3. There’s a scene where Squirt is looking at a sculpture of a young ballerina (Little Dancer of Fourteen Years by Edgar Degas). She mentions that it’s the same one on the necklace her grandmother gave her after her first dance recital. The real-life inspiration was when my daughter’s grandmother gave her that necklace after her first dance recital. It’s a special memory!
4. My favorite treat in Paris is hazelnut, chocolate, and banana crepes. Street vendors make them, and they are absolutely the best! Bubba and Squirt have some while they’re in Paris. I’ve shared the recipe in the back of the book so readers can enjoy them at home.
5. The original City of Boneswas called Art Thieves in Paris. It was written ten years ago and was intended to be part of an open-ended series. Since then, I’ve revamped the story line, making books three, four, and five of the Bubba and Squirt series part of a trilogy. The original story is still part of the final version, but I’ve added more magic and mythical creatures.

The well-paced, engaging story of Bubba and Squirt's latest adventure . . .
I previously read and reviewed the author's 'Bubba and Squirt's Mayan Adventure,' the second book in this series. I feel this new book can be read as a standalone.
Once again, siblings Bubba and Squirt have a fun, amicable relationship as they work together to solve the mystery of finding their missing father.
The brother and sister dig up the entrance to a tunnel under the sycamore tree in their back yard so they can travel to France. The passage about their journey will delight youngsters who are fans of fantasy.
While in Paris the pair's adventures gain momentum. With the help of some new friends who know the city very well, Bubba and Squirt wander through some of the great sites of Paris—the Eiffel Tower, the MuseΓ© d'Orsay, the Tuileries Garden, and the Louvre Museum. Readers are introduced to descriptions about French architecture, art, and some unexpected and creepy historical locales I didn't know about prior to reading this book!
The back matter in this book is extensive and exceptional. Facts about some of the sites and events in the story are included along with a bibliography of books for children to read about Paris. A Glossary of French Words, Numbers (English to French translation), a Recipe, a Bibliography, and a Map of France will aid in answering questions readers may have about the experiences of the main characters.
Highly-recommended for middle-grade readers who are fans of fantasy, adventure, and historical fiction stories. The author has filled this story with the rich history of France by blending fact with fiction. This book is completely clean in language and content.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All of my thoughts and opinions shared here are solely my own.
