As traffic slowed, a familiar face came into view across the street. It was him. Her ex-boyfriend, Troy Sanders, stood stock still and met Sophie’s gaze. He squinted and placed one finger in front of his lips. Shhh.

“No.” Sophie expelled the word in a whisper and her stiletto heel gave way causing her to sink into Miles’s strong arms.

“What’s wrong?” He helped her up. “Do you need to sit?”

Sophie pulled away from him, her mouth dry and her head spinning out of control. She chanced another peek between cars to the sidewalk beyond, but now a group of teens stood in a huddle where she had seen Troy.

“No, I have to go.” She cleared her throat. “I have to go right now.”

Miles touched her cheek and she almost melted back into his arms. “Tell me what I can do to help?” His forehead wrinkled.

“I’m so sorry, Miles.”

Sophie took three faltering steps and nodded at one of the waiting taxis lining the curb. She sank into the backseat, pulled the voluminous fabric of her dress inside, and slammed the door. With one last glance at Miles’s shocked face, she waved goodbye to Paris and the possibility of some crazy fairy tale ending coming true.

Nick whirled, facing his boss approaching from the corner office. A rising moon observed them through bulletproof windows. Silver light slanted across empty desks and cubicle dividers. “I didn’t realize you were still here.”

Special Agent in Charge Luke Santiago dripped with perspiration, his necktie unknotted, and his shirtsleeves rolled to his elbows. He extracted a handkerchief from his pocket, dabbed his brow, mustache, and sideburns, then stashed it away.

“What’s with the sweat? It’s got to be twenty degrees outside, and the heat’s been off for hours.”

“Ambassador Van Sloan received another threat.”

“That makes three, right?”

Santiago nodded. “He’s requested you for a special assignment. Security detail.”

Nick swallowed. “Protect the ambassador? I’m a risk analyst, not a field agent.”

“He’s aware. He wants you because of your ability to quickly analyze a situation and make sound judgments. Besides, you won’t be providing security for Van Sloan.”

“Not the ambassador?” Nick’s brow furrowed. “Then who?”

“His daughter, Bridgette.”

Nick coughed and ran his finger between his collar and neck. “I’m not sure I’m comfortable handling her on my own.”

“You won’t be. FBI is transferring someone.”

“Who?”

“Special Agent Powers.”

Nick raised an eyebrow. “Agent Powers? As in Arizona Powers, the one who flipped out after that Mitchell kid was murdered?”

“You’ve got the gist. She’ll be here first thing Monday morning.”

Nick had never met Powers in person, but he’d read enough news articles and heard enough scuttlebutt to know that working with her would not be without its challenges. According to the media, the woman had a personal vendetta against kidnappers, and her nervous breakdown and subsequent stint in therapy had been widely publicized.

“Is she stable enough to return to work?”

“Director Carlton assured me Powers is fit enough for this task. Take it easy on her, Trueheart. If it weren’t for this assignment, she’d be collecting unemployment. I’ll see you Monday.” Santiago turned to leave.

     Hugo opened a sleepy eye. At first, he thought he was at home, but what he was lying on was much too hard to be his bed, and the light was much too bright to be his room. He looked up and saw nothing but blue sky. Strange. He slowly stirred to life. Where am I? He looked around, and the shock of what he saw jolted him out of his dreamy state. He hopped to his feet.

He was on the side of a ridge. He looked in every direction, but the view was the same as far as he could see. The terrain was hilly and arid with rocks, gnarled trees, and measly shrubs sprinkled around. The area was covered with green grass which had turned brown in spots, creating the semblance of a two-colored carpet.

The sun was shining brightly without a cloud in the sky. The weirdest thing of all wasn't the landscape—it was his clothes. Gone were his jeans and T-shirt. Instead, he wore a beige knee-length wool tunic with a leather belt around his waist and leather sandals. He felt a chill when he recognized them from his dreams. MY REVIEW:

One clever 5-year-old girl plus one mischievous golden retriever equals lots of whimsy and fun in this enjoyable contemporary romance . . .

Nicole Connelly has moved back to Golden temporarily while she is completing a project for her employer, Sanders Entertainment. She loves her job, but she is hesitant about living back in Golden for a month after leaving her hometown and family several years ago.

Her recently-adopted golden retriever, Gus, is a bundle of affectionate fluff that is an expert escape-artist. He makes friends easily, but he needs some training to break his bad habits and become a well-behaved canine.

Dr. Ethan Price, the town's veterinarian who lives in the house next door to Nicole's rental, is intense and serious. His irritation when he finds his five-year-old daughter, Holly, playing with Gus out in their front yard comes across loud and clear in his initial meeting with Nicole.

The core wound for both of the adults is a lack of trust in others because of major traumas they survived in the past. Both Ethan and Nicole are hesitant to open up and share their past experiences with the other. Holly's warm and welcoming spirit toward Nicole and Gus provides the perfect catalyst to jumpstart Ethan's acceptance of Nicole.

Things don’t always go smoothly as Nicole attempts to heal her relationships with her Mother, two sisters, and one half-sister, but the kind community of Golden helps out by giving support and encouragement whenever needed.

I enjoyed reading about Nicole's job and the creative ideas she came up with for the town's seasonal promotions to increase tourism in the area. As an animal lover, I enjoyed Dr. Price's care and kindness toward animals and their owners. Holly has a joyful spirit which is hard to ignore. Last but not least, Gus was a valuable addition to the plot in many ways.
