Laurel’s fair-skinned cheeks glowed red. She hugged the porch post as if it provided an anchor to keep her from being swept away by her own wrath. “Royce and Murphy think they can bully me. After all these years, they still . . .”
“Have the MacMahons given you a fair offer?”
“Fair? What do you think is fair, Mr. Spencer?” Her soft, southern drawl and feline smile prickled the hairs on Quinn’s neck.
“I’m not familiar with property values in the area, ma’am, but I’d be pleased to look into it for you once I’m situated in Bold Creek.”
She splayed her long, thin fingers on her hips. Piano fingers. Fingers his musically inclined mother had possessed. “You’d waste your time. I have no intention of selling.”
Her cavalier attitude grated. “Then perhaps remarrying will ease your burden.”
Laurel batted her eyes and leaned closer. “Are you offering, Mr. Spencer?”
He took a step backward and heat flamed his skin. He hated the reaction her outlandish behavior provoked. No wonder men refused to work for her.
“No, Mrs. Tillman, I am not, nor will I ever.” Quinn’s tone matched her soft, yet firm, voice. “However, I agree with the cattleman. It may be in your best interest and the best interests of the other La Casa del Fuego women to turn to more traditional roles. I assure you, I am only concerned for your welfare.”
“And who on this ranch concerns you most, Mr. Spencer? Camille?”
He sighed and touched a finger to the brim of his hat, weary of the verbal game she played. “I appreciate your hospitality these weeks, Mrs. Tillman.”
As he walked toward the carriage, she called out, “I didn’t ask for your advice, Mr. Spencer. Nor will I ever.”
Quinn stopped at the mocking reference to his own comment. “And I can assure you, madam, that I won’t make the mistake of providing you with any in the future.”
