“How about some breakfast to go with the coffee today?” She was pleased to hear she sounded as though she had full control over her faculties, even if her heart raced, hoping he’d say yes.
“That’d be nice,” he answered. “Anything’ll be great.”
That was it? Anything?
“Oh. Uh, okay. I’ll be right back,” she told him before dashing into the kitchen.
While Emilie managed the coffee shop for Mr. Moody, overseeing operations while working the counter and serving food, Byron Watts ruled the kitchen. A romantic at heart who loved to wax poetic and philosophize about the meaning of life, his mastery and fierce ownership over the grill, the prep station, the cooktop, the ovens, the freezer, the fridge, and all the ingredients found in any of those locations had earned him the nickname Lord Byron.
“Why are you in here?” he demanded the moment Emilie cleared the swing door.
“I need breakfast,” she answered, a deer in headlights.
“So write the order on the notepad, tear off the top sheet, and attach it to the order wheel…from your side of that wall.” Byron pointed at the wall behind Emilie with a metal spatula and an unwavering eye.
“But there’s no order,” she marveled.
“Then there’s no breakfast,” he countered.
“I want it all,” she stated.
“Excuse me?” he asked.
“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right?” Emilie mused, pacing between the dining room wall and the prep island, distracted but still coherent enough not to walk any further into the room. “And he looks like he could use a good meal.”
“Who?” Byron’s unwavering gaze switched to a questioning one.
“Him.”
“Him who?” he tried again.
“The man.”
“The man,” Byron repeated.
“Yes.”
“And what did the man order?”
“He didn’t.”
“Emilie,” Byron growled.
She responded with a wide-eyed look of innocence.
“What did the man say?” Byron tried again.
“Anything’ll be great,” she quoted.
“Anything?”
“Anything,” Emilie confirmed with one firm nod. “And so, we’ll give him everything.”
