In this scene, Parker steps out of the tack room and runs into a woman—a stranger to him. The awkward meeting suddenly takes a turn for the worse.
He steadied her, her floral-scented shampoo lingering in the space between them, warmth sparking under his skin. Her rounded eyes settled for a beat or two into something almost apologetic.
Then, as if this day hadn't been bad enough, her eyes lit with fire that could scorch the earth.
"You!"
Parker's shoulders tensed automatically, muscle memory from too many confrontations just like this one. His hands twitched toward his sides in the same unconscious movement he'd developed after being cuffed so many times. The familiar dread settled in his gut like a stone.
Knowing full well he'd never met the woman before in his life, Parker could only assume Lucas had struck again.
