It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…Merry Winters is excited for her dream-come-true moment: Being an on-site crafter for a Christmas movie. The tidings of joy are short-lived as she finds herself becoming a referee, dealing with a raging Ebenezer, participating in a bucket brigade, and finding evidence in a “murder.”

Is someone trying to stop the production or is it tied to a secret someone has on Luna Carmichael, the star of the movie and the queen of Christmas?

When Marie, Luna’s assistant, stumbles away from a car accident and dies, Merry believes the accident wasn’t quite so accidental. Was Luna or Marie the target? Merry finds more questions than answers, but one thing is certain: Everyone has an ulterior motive for being part of the production—including Marie.

After another murder, Merry wonders if the deaths are tied to a baby born long ago and abandoned. And more importantly, will Merry live long enough to find out?

About Christina Freeburn

Christina Freeburn has always loved books. There was nothing better than picking up a story and being transported to another place. The love of reading evolved into the love of writing and she’s been writing since her teenage years. Her first novel was a 2003 Library of Virginia Literary Award nominee. Her mysteries series, Faith Hunter Scrap This Mystery and Merry & Bright Handcrafted Mysteries, are a mix of crafty and crime and feature heroines whose crafting time is interrupted by crime solving.
Christina served in the US Army and has also worked as a paralegal, librarian, church secretary, and golf shop pro. She lives in West Virginia with her husband, dog, and a rarely seen cat except by those who are afraid and allergic to felines.

Adding Some Christmas in July
By Christina Freeburn

July is known for Independence Day, summer, hot days, and Christmas in July…okay not for most people but it is to me. Being that I, like my heroine Merry Winters, love Christmas, this is my favorite thing about July (besides two of children were born in July). I’m not much into fireworks, heat, pools (I’m not a very good swimmer) but I adore Christmas, and I love that I can get a little bit of that feel during the summer. I find little ways to add some Christmas in July and wanted to share some of them.

Christmas decorating. Not too much as I don’t want to annoy or seem like I no longer know what time of year it is…which actually hasn’t been that hard to do recently. An easy décor to add is a Christmas tree wine bottle. Basically, it’s a dark green wine bottle which I’ve added a Christmas tree vinyl decal on and add some decorative lights inside the bottle. And of course, this is all done after drinking the wine.

Christmas Movies. I have a nice collection of holiday movies at my home so have no trouble finding something Christmassy. My favorites are Christmas with the Kranks and Naughty and Nice, a Hallmark channel original from 2012. The Hallmark channel also helps out by showing some Christmas movies.

Christmas/holiday themed books. There are a lot of wonderful stand alone and Christmas series out there in different genres. I like to mix it up between mystery and romance winter holiday offerings.

Holiday crafting. After the 4th of July, I start brainstorming idea for Christmas gifts I want to make my family. For the last three years, I’ve been handcrafting a gift for husband, children, their significant others, and the grands. The first year I spend a lot of late nights and rushed through a project, so I decided to make it part of my Christmas in July celebration.

Listening to holiday music. I especially love to do this when I’m creating Christmas décor. I also like doing my décor crafting before the holidays as I’m not rushed, and I have a longer time to display new creations.

And this year, I might send out some Christmas in July cards to those friends and family who’d enjoy a holiday card during the summer.

ABOUT THE BOOK

A Father's Promise by Mindy Obenhaus
Title: A Father's Promise
Author: Mindy Obenhaus
Publisher: Love Inspired
Release Date: June 16, 2020
Genre: Inspirational Contemporary Romance

He doesn't think he deserves a family...
but now he has a daughter.

Stunned to discover he has a child, Wes Bishop isn't sure he's father material. But his adorable daughter needs him, and he can't help feeling drawn to her mother, Laurel Donovan -- a woman he's finally getting to know.

But can this sudden dad overcome a past tragedy that has him convinced he's not meant to be a husband or a father...and make a promise of forever?

EXCERPT:

Laurel’s quick intake of air was hard to miss as she watched her little girl.

Still kneeling, Wes stretched his hands toward Sarah-Jane. “Come on, sweetheart, you can do it.”

She stepped once more, then bobbled, but caught herself before continuing. Several steps later, she collapsed into Wes’s waiting arms.

“You did it, Sarah-Jane!” He hugged her tight, pride weaving through him.

“I can’t believe it.” Laurel pressed a hand to her cheek. “That’s more steps than she’s ever taken. She was actually walking all by herself.”

“I guess you just had to strengthen up those legs, didn’t you, Sarah-Jane?” Still holding his daughter, he stood.

“Or have the right motivation.”

He looked at Laurel to find her smiling as she approached.

She took hold of her daughter’s hand. “Were you showing off for your daddy?” Laurel froze then and so did he.

Their eyes met.

“I-I’m sorry.” She took a step back. “That just kind of slipped out.”

“No, it’s okay.” He smoothed a hand over his daughter’s back. “Daddy is a distinction I will wear proudly.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Mindy Obenhaus

Award-winning author Mindy Obenhaus is passionate about touching readers with Biblical truths in an entertaining and sometimes adventurous manner. She lives on a ranch in Texas with her husband, two sassy pups, countless cattle, deer, and the occasional coyote, mountain lion, or snake. When she’s not writing, she enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, cooking, and watching copious amounts of the Hallmark Channel.

JUNE:  Welcome to Reading, Writing & Stitch-Metic, Mindy. Congratulations on the recent release of your tenth Love Inspired contemporary inspirational romance novel, 'A Father's Promise'!

MINDY:  Thank you, June. It’s great to be here.

JUNE:  Please share with us how the idea for this story came to you. How did you develop the characters and setting?

MINDY:  Honestly, I don’t remember what inspired this story. Usually, it’s just a nugget of “what-if” that gets the ball rolling. Developing the setting was probably the most difficult thing for me. My first nine books were set in Ouray, Colorado, a real place, so I knew what was where and what it looked like. Creating the fictitious town of Bliss, Texas was a challenge because Texas is also where I live. Ultimately, I ended up picking and choosing interesting things from the many tiny towns I’ve driven through or visited.

JUNE:  Do you have any writing tips you can offer to aspiring or new authors who may read this post? What are some things that helped you on the road to success when you began your writing career?

MINDY:  Never stop learning and never give up. If God has called you to be a published author, it will happen in His time. Our job is to be obedient to that calling and that means honing our craft until it’s worthy of publication. Writer’s organizations such as ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers) have been incredibly valuable to me at every step of the writing process. Learning, seeking publication, learning, promotion, learning… I cannot recommend them highly enough.

JUNE:  Your website states that you love to cook. Do you have a favorite family recipe that you would like to share with us here?

MINDY:  Narrowing it down to just one is very difficult, but this is Chicken and Rice recipe has been passed down through at least three generations and is still a family favorite today.

🍚🍲🥘🍽 🍚🍲🥘🍽🍚🍲🥘🍽🍚🍲🥘🍽🍚🍲🥘

 Chicken & Rice Recipe

·       A whole chicken, cut up, or whatever part of the chicken happens to be your favorite.

·       1 ¼ cups long-grain white rice, uncooked

·       1 packet dry onion soup mix

·       1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

·       1 ½ teaspoons Beau Monde, a Spice Islands brand seasoning blend. **See note

·       4 cups water

·       4-8 tablespoons melted butter

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Place the dry rice in a 9 x 13 baking dish and sprinkle with the soup mix and seasonings. Pour water over rice and give it a quick stir.

Dip chicken pieces in melted butter to coat. Nestle chicken into rice mixture.

Bake 45-50 minutes, until chicken is cooked, and liquid has been absorbed.

** The Beau Monde and Italian seasoning are important for the right flavor. If you do not have access to Beau Monde, you can make your own with 1/2 tsp celery salt, 3/4 tsp onion powder and 1/4 tsp seasoning salt. Mix together before adding to rice.

🍚🍲🥘🍽 🍚🍲🥘🍽🍚🍲🥘🍽🍚🍲🥘🍽🍚🍲🥘

JUNE:  You and your husband live on a ranch in Texas. Please share some of your favorite things about living on a ranch and how they contribute to your spiritual health and well-being.

MINDY:  Oh, where do I start. We moved to the ranch that has been in my husband’s family for generations three years ago. Prior to that, we’d lived in the suburbs of Dallas-Ft. Worth for decades, so it was wonderful to get away from all the hustle and bustle of city life. Not to mention the traffic. Oy!

Our house is in the woods, so we’re surrounded by nature and with a slower pace of life, I’m actually able to stop and enjoy it. I’m constantly on the lookout for God’s glory, whether it’s a beautiful sunset, a hummingbird at my window or a newborn calf. I’m calmer now, and with all that’s gone on in 2020, I have an even greater appreciation for a simpler life.

JUNE:  Sounds delicious! Thank you for chatting with us here today, Mindy! We wish you continued success in your writing endeavors and much happiness in your family life.

MINDY:  Thanks, June!

Bringing a tracking dog to town
put her in a killer’s sights

Inheriting a ranch is a fresh start for Emma Pierce, her baby and her search-and-rescue dog—until someone tries to kill her. But Sheriff Reed Atkinson won’t let anyone hurt his first love…especially when they uncover a connection to his vanished sister.

Can Reed solve both cases before he loses his sister and the woman he’s falling for all over again?

EXCERPT:
The sound of a loud crash turned his blood cold. Emma!
The front door was wooden, old, with a flimsy deadbolt. Thunder boomed, and Reed took advantage. He rammed the door with a well-placed kick. His heel screamed in protest, but the wood splintered.
“Come on, come on...” He focused his energy on the weak spot he’d created. He slammed into the door again. It shuddered and gave way.
He entered the house, his flashlight moving over everything. A banister leading upstairs. A dining room to his right. A living room to his left. His breathing was ragged, but the hand holding his weapon was steady.
Which way? Upstairs or toward the back of the house?
He paused, straining to listen. There. A noise coming from the kitchen. He raced down the hallway. Someone was coughing.
His flashlight caught a dark figure bolting out the back door. Reed swung to his left. Emma sat on the tile floor, one hand holding her neck. Her face was red and her long hair stuck out in all directions. Relief replaced the terror in her expression when she caught sight of him.
