About the Book

The Shop Down the Lane

Title:    The Shop Down the Lane
Series:
   Letters from Lancaster County
Author:
   Leslie Gould
Publisher:
   Bethany House
Release Date:
   May 6, 2025
Genre:   Amish Romance

Leslie Gould delights in this sweet and humorous Amish romance reminiscent of The Shop Around the Corner and You've Got Mail.

Lois Yoder has always found solace in the quiet life of Paradise, Pennsylvania, where she manages a gift shop that reflects her Amish community's simple values. Her tranquil world is upended when Moses Lantz, a former Amishman turned Mennonite and the man who broke her heart, buys the shop with ambitious plans to transform it into a tourist hub--a move that Lois fiercely opposes.

Seeking a distraction, Lois joins a bird watchers' circle letter under an alias. But unknown to her, Moses does the same at the urging of a friend. While their correspondence blossoms into a tender romance, the enmity between Lois and Moses in real life only intensifies. Can they overcome their animosity and embrace the love they've found through their letters, or will their stubborn hearts keep them apart forever?

This heartwarming Amish romance includes themes of bird watching, correspondence by letters, enemies to lovers, and family secrets for readers of Beverly Lewis, Wanda E. Brunstetter, and Shelley Shepard Gray.

EXCERPT:

As interesting as the circle letter sounded, she forced Amy’s letter and Teresa’s sheet of information back into the envelope and slipped it into her apron pocket. She had no desire to join a circle letter. After she’d moved back to Big Valley, Amy, three other friends from their days as scholars, and Lois started one. By the time the letter traveled from one member, who wrote a page, to the next, who wrote another, to the next, the whole process became painfully slow. How would it work with birding? By the time a letter came around, it would be the next season—or worse, the next year.

When she stepped back into the shop, Scotty and Moses were standing by the birch tree, looking at the birdhouses and birds.

Moses, due to his arrogance and lack of self-awareness, most likely didn’t realize he was an accidental—a bird who showed up where he shouldn’t have. Like a mangrove cuckoo in Pennsylvania.

Scotty turned. “Lois.” He stepped toward her, and she handed him the envelopes. Scotty took them and motioned toward Moses. “Moses, this is Lois Yoder. Lois, Moses Lantz.”

“Hallo,” Lois said, keeping her voice as neutral as possible. She extended her hand.

He stepped forward as if he’d never seen her before in his life. Either he was an excellent actor or a complete jerk. He was definitely a strange bird. His grip was firm and professional, as if they really were meeting for the first time.

In his deep voice, Moses said, “I’m pleased to meet you.” She forced herself not to roll her eyes.

He shifted his gaze past her to the wall and dropped her hand and stepped around her. She turned. He headed toward the bunting collage, perhaps relieved to have a distraction. “I have to have this.” Lois suppressed a groan. Not the painted bunting collage.

Moses took his wallet from the pocket of his jacket. “I’ll buy it now.”

MY REVIEW:

🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

A unique story about finding one's true self as family secrets of the past are revealed . . .

This is a story that will remain with me for a long time. The main characters are multi-dimensional individuals who are attempting to live their authentic lives even though they don't understand just how their family's history has shaped their present lives.

The author has given readers a fine gift by creating a bird watchers' circle letter group where readers can experience an insider's view at the hearts of the participants in the circle through reading their heartfelt letters. I love stories told in the epistolary mode because I believe that handwritten letters are treasures we can revisit many times.

Once she opens her heart, orphan Lois Yoder discovers many people care for her and will support her in her quest to make it on her own. She has a real gift interacting with the customers she serves at the shop down the lane where she works. She is always willing to lend a helping hand to her friends and neighbors.

Moses Lantz is a successful businessman who lost his father in an accident. Now Moses is slowly losing his beloved mother to early-onset dementia and it causes this devoted son much pain to watch his mother disappear. He is a good-hearted man, but he is impulsive and the smallest things seem to set him off.

I enjoyed this book's cover because the lovely photo of the young woman looking into the sky exudes pure joy at observing God's handiwork in nature!

The faith thread woven throughout this book is strong and works in perfect sync for this genre. The book is completely clean in language and content.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through JustRead Publicity Tours. All of my thoughts and opinions shared here are solely my own.

Winning Over the Baker

Title:  Winning Over the Baker
Author:  Danielle Thorne
Publisher:   Love Inspired
Release Date:   April 29, 2025
Genre:   Inspirational Romance

Can this single mom have it all--

Without losing her heart?

Just when Tam Rochester’s dreams of expanding her herb shop and being able to support her daughter are finally coming true, Patrick Butler arrives in town. She wasn’t counting on the single dad’s plans for a bakery right across the street or the competition it’ll bring. Tam’s not afraid to fight for her future, but going toe-to-toe with Patrick would be easier if she didn’t adore his kids—and if she could just ignore her growing feelings for the too-talented baker…

EXCERPT:

"I need the bakery to succeed for my children. They need a safe, permanent home.”

Tam’s gaze flickered with something like concern. “I get it. And I wish you luck,” she said with a heavy exhale.

“Thanks. I think.”

She pointed toward The Gracious Earth and the empty real estate beside it. “Do you see that space there? I’ve wanted to sell my own teas for years, and Petals and Pie is the perfect way. It’s going to be a meeting place— the heart of the town, I hope. It’d make my daughter and me more comfortable, that’s for sure, and now’s the time since the photography studio there closed.”

“Times are tough for everybody.” Patrick’s chest tangled with emotions. A tea and pie room across from a bakery. Surely most people would want to sit down with a cup of tea and relax while they ate rather than dash in and out of an old bakery. He would have to do more than repaint. He’d need it to be irresistible. Patrick realized Tam could see the calculations in his eyes and cleared his throat. “I better head over to the school and get Scarlet,” he mumbled.

“I’m right behind you,” she echoed in a companionable tone as she climbed into her car.

Yes, yes you are.

MY REVIEW:

A moving story about learning to trust after being abandoned by the person who vowed to always be at your side . . .

Single mom, Tam Rochester, is thrilled about expanding her business in Lagrasse, Georgia until she learns some news that sends her mind into chaos. Single dad, Patrick Butler, is anxious to get his newly-purchased bakery up and running. When he gets the cold shoulder from the pretty shop owner across the street, he is mystified as to why she's reacting to him in such a negative way.

Tam's tween daughter, Piper, is well-adjusted and she excels in her academic studies. Patrick's twelve-year-old daughter, Scarlet, has been forced to live through a childhood filled with experiences no child should have to witness or encounter. She excels at art—a creative outlet that gives this young girl a feeling of accomplishment. Scarlet is slowly learning how to navigate a life under her father's caring guidance, but she has a lot to learn about trusting people and building friendships. Scarlet's biological brother, Jax, is an eight-month-old ball of loveable energy who brings joy to his sister, his adopted dad, and just about everyone he counters.

After some tense moments based on Tam's competitive drive and fears of how Patrick's bakery may affect her new shop's success, she has a change of heart. The two begin to assist each other in various ways which allows them to spend some positive time getting to know each other. Tam reaches out to both of Patrick's children which is a great relief to their father because he's already accepted that his children need a nurturing woman in their lives.

It’s hard to hear God’s voice when you’ve already decided what you want him to say.

In the wilds of the rugged West, Betsy Smith discovers beauty in every corner—from the blazing sunsets to the wind murmuring secrets through the mountains. Yet, it's the magnetism of Gabe Manning, with his dark complexion and dashing demeanor, that draws her gaze. Having known him since childhood, Betsy sees in Gabe the embodiment of the heroes she admires from her a stalwart protector of the innocent, a champion of justice, a man of unshakable integrity, and a paragon of honor, guided by principles as steadfast as the mountains themselves— all while reconciling with his Arapaho Indian heritage. Yet, amid her admiration, Betsy longs for God’s reassurance that Gabe is the one for her.

As deputy of Shumard Oak Bend, Missouri, in 1875, Gabe “Little Sun” Manning sees the allure and harshness of frontier life. Amidst the chaos, he finds solace in the presence of Miss Betsy Smith, a compassionate schoolteacher whose independence and intellect captivate him as profoundly as her beauty. Yet, as their bond deepens, Gabe wrestles with doubts about his ability to fulfill the desires of her heart. He knows she's willing to forsake her career for a future with him, but can he offer her the family she seeks? Haunted by the secrets of his past and desperate for redemption, Gabe faces his most formidable challenge yet.

EXCERPT:

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do,” Betsy whispered, her voice raw.

“You don’t have to figure it out right now.” Gabe’s voice was gentle. “We’ll take it slow. One step at a time.”

He’d said we’ll. The word settled deep in her heart.

Later, when they stood in the twilight by Thunder’s saddle, Gabe offered his hand. “I’ll help you up.”

She hesitated, then took it. Warmth spread through her, unexpected but welcome. Once mounted, she adjusted her skirts, and Gabe swung up behind her, his presence steady and solid.

They rode in silence for a while, Thunder’s hooves beating a gentle rhythm beneath them. Finally, she murmured, “You don’t have to do this.”

“Do what?”

“Take care of me.”

“I want to.”

Simple words. No strings. But they wrapped around her like a warm blanket in winter.

As they approached her home, Gabe dismounted and helped her down. Their hands lingered longer than necessary.

“Thank you, Gabe.”

“Anytime, Miss Smith. You know that.”

And she believed him.
