ABOUT THE BOOK

Plain Refuge by Dana R. Lynn Title: Plain Refuge
Series: Amish Country Justice #8
Author: Dana R. Lynn
Publisher: Love Inspired Suspense
Release Date: June 1, 2020
Genre: Romantic Suspense

On the run from hired gunmen,
can she find safety in Amish country?

After overhearing an illegal weapons deal, Sophie Larson knows two things: her uncle’s a dangerous criminal…and he wants her dead. Now undercover cop Aiden Forster has no choice but to blow his cover and protect Sophie by hiding her and her deaf sister in Amish country. But with a mole in the police force, danger isn’t far behind.

EXCERPT:

There seemed to be two people in the car. Aiden couldn’t get a good view of the girl sitting in the back seat, but he could clearly see the woman in the front. Dark sunglasses hid her eyes, and her hair was pulled back into a thick ponytail high on the back of her head. It was a bright coppery red. Oval face, high cheekbones. Her mouth was drawn into a frown.

She looked familiar. Had he met her? He didn’t think so. His memory was sharp. No way he’d forget that face.

A second later, it clicked. Phillip had mentioned that his niece was coming over later. Aiden checked the time on his phone. She was early. Really early. He bit off the frustrated exclamation that rose to his lips as she turned off the engine. Aiden didn’t know that much about Phillip’s family, but he did know that his boss wouldn’t let any affection he may have had for them ruin a business deal. And listening to him talk about his family, Aiden knew Phillip did not harbor much feeling other than disgust for most of his family.

This had all the warning signs of an impending disaster. If Phillip wasn’t ready for her, she was as good as dead. And so was her passenger.

JUNE: As an educator, you work with deaf and hearing impaired students. Please share how you use your experiences as a teacher to build your characters and settings -or- how you organize your work {outline, spreadsheet, etc.} For your romantic suspense novels.

DANA: Hi all! I am so glad to be here today! My new book, Plain Refuge, released on June 1st, and it’s dear to my heart. Not only because I love my hero and heroine. Aiden and Sophie were so much fun to write about. However, the character that really touched my heart was Celine, Sophie’s 12 year-old sister. Celine is profoundly deaf. As a teacher for the deaf and hard of hearing, being able to include characters such as Celine in my books means so much. She is strong, spunky, and meets her challenges with courage.

I am sometimes asked about my system. Honestly, it’s still developing. Sometimes I try something, but then I find a new way to do it. The way I organize my work now is completely different when I first started. Back then, I was only concerned with completing one book. It never occurred to me how many details I would need to retain from one book to the next. As I continued writing, a new strategy evolved.

When I begin to work on a new book for Love Inspired Suspense, I always start with my characters. I find pictures that look like my characters. Then I do character interviews to learn about what makes them tick. What is their motivation, conflict, etc. Once I have my characters down, it’s time to begin.

I learned several years ago to keep a binder for my work. In my binder, I keep a character chart. I add each character, no matter how fleeting, to the chart. I include names, ages, physical descriptions, careers and special skills, and which books they ‘re in. This way, I don’t repeat names or change their appearance. I also keep a synopsis, or plot description, for each book in the binder. The final item is a timeline. This is especially important if there are connected books. For example, my Amish country Justice books 1-5 are all connected. 6 and 7 are another miniseries. Plain Refuge starts off another 3-book miniseries. Each miniseries gets its own binder.

Recently, I have started playing around with Airtable to keep my work organized. It’s very convenient to use when I’m out and think of a new scene or a new character comes to mind. I’m not ready to give up my binder system yet, though. When I’m in the middle of writing a scene, it’s easy to flip a binder open to the correct tab to find what I need.

My research, depending on where it is from, is either bookmarked on my computer, or I have it in my binder. Either way, whenever I need it, it’s close at hand.

In another five years, I have no doubt my process will have changed again.

Thank you for having me on your blog today! I love talking all things bookish.
