BEHIND-THE-SCENES FACTS ABOUT 'THE HEART OF A HERO' AS SHARED BY AUTHOR SUSAN MAY WARREN:

One thing I love to do as an author is surprise my readers with little nuggets of information, cameos from past characters, or even little know facts of twists…and Heart of a Hero is full of goodies for readers.

Here’s a sampling of the Behind the Scenes little known facts:

Heart of Hero takes place at a resort in Key West. The location is an actual resort (although the name has been changed) and it is located on the plaza that is the furthest southern point in America. It’s known for it’s spectacular sunsets and every night there is a sundowner party!

One of the best places to SCUBA dive (and snorkel) in the continental US is John Pennekamp coral reef state park. The seventy square mile park is full of mangroves for kayaking, but also extends out to a massive, beautiful coral reef off the coast. SCUBA divers and snorkelers can take a boat ride out to the reef and see the  statue of Jesus (called Christ of the Abyss) an 8 ½ foot statue submerged in the center of the coral reef. You’ll find nurse sharks, turtles and all color and type of fish swimming around the statue (and bonus fun fact—the sister statue is submerged near Portafino, Italy!). Well worth the trip, even if you aren’t a diver. (you can see it snorkeling, too! My heroine, Aria, takes this trip (and gets seasick from the big waves!) the day before the hurricane hits the keys!  Oh, and fun research fact—I dove down to see both statues (yes, even the one in Italy!)

There is only ONE road all the way down the coast to Key West. When a hurricane arrives, they shut down the ENTIRE ROAD going south and make it into two lanes north so people can escape. (My hero, Jake, gets down there just before they shut down the road!)

The tiny island of Key West is best navigated by scooter! It takes very little time to get from one side to the other. And, if you’re an author, you’ll want to stop by Earnest Hemingway’s Key West home for a tour!

One of the coolest places in Key West (and not necessarily a tourist destination) is the Special Forces Underwater Operations School in Key West, where the army trains their combat divers. They have a huge tower that simulates deep water dives and rescues, as well as a grueling dive training course. Jake happens upon this school and utilized some of their equipment when he rescues one of the characters.

Let’s talk Europe! The Heart of a Hero subplot takes Ham to Europe to find out if Signe, his wife, is still alive. His first stop is Kiev, Ukraine where he visits a park. We visited the exact park years ago when we visited Ukraine on a family missions trip. There, he meets Chet Stryker from the Missions of Mercy series.

Italy! Then, Ham heads to Sicily, Italy. We love Italy—we’ve been there twice, and love everything from the wine to the art to the gelato! Ham meets Luke Dekker (also from Missions of Mercy) in a square in the city of Catania, a scene that is very typical of a thousand tiny squares throughout the country. (And Sicily is also where my Navy corpsman son is stationed, so I got first-hand info!)

I couldn’t NOT include one of hallmark locations in Minnesota—the Mall of America! I had to “slightly” reconstruct one of the areas, but the center park is accurately depicted, as well as the shops and stores. During the cold months of January, we love to hang out there and pretend it’s the height of summer! (and/or dream of being in Key West)

Jake’s home is an actual house on Lake Minnetonka, a home of a friend where we had our youth group gatherings every summer. I grew up on the lake, waterskiing and boating and sailing. (and even went over once in a hobie cat—although, thankfully, didn’t get caught in the rigging!)

Finally, if you read the Montana Marshall’s series, you’ll recognize Ham’s subplot as the other side of the story that you didn’t get in Ford’s book. If you’re wondering why Ham didn’t show up to rescue Ford and RJ…well, now you know.

That’s a glimpse of the “behind the scenes” nuggets from Heart of a Hero. Thank you for reading and here’s hoping you get a chance to visit Key West, Italy or even the Mall of America.
