Hairstylist Marla Vail and her husband get tangled up in murder when their Fourth of July visit to a living history village ends with a bang—and a body.

Salon owner Marla Vail and her detective husband Dalton are having a blast visiting a Florida living history village over Fourth of July weekend. But when a Seminole battle reenactment turns up a real dead body, it sets off fireworks among the villagers. One of the cast members has gone off script to murder the town marshal with a tomahawk in his head.

As Dalton gets involved in the investigation, Marla determines to help him solve the case. Her flare for uncovering secrets reveals that everyone in the village is a suspect. Instead of celebrating the holiday with red, white, and barbecues, she discovers secrets, lies, and false avenues. Did the marshal’s murder have anything to do with a lost Confederate payroll, or did his plans to renovate the park light a fuse that he couldn’t snuff out?

In a place where history comes alive, the dead bodies are piling up. Marla would rather be chilling and grilling, but somebody’s mind is on killing. If she’s not careful, her sleuthing might blow up in her face like a faulty firecracker and she'll become the next victim. Recipes Included!

Tales of Lost Treasure

by Nancy J. Cohen

Who doesn’t love a good treasure hunt? Add in family secrets and a ghost story to bring more fun to a mystery. In my latest cozy release titled Star Tangled Murder, hairstylist Marla Vail and her detective husband Dalton are attending a battle reenactment at a living history village over Fourth of July weekend. When they discover a real dead body on the grounds, Dalton gets on the case.Someone has murdered the town marshal, and the villagers are all suspect. It quickly becomes apparent that almost everyone had a grudge against the victim.

Marla isn’t one to stand idly by on the sidelines while her husband pursues a case. She joins in, utilizing her unique skills in getting suspects to talk. As she interviews Lizzy Canfield, the tour guide at historic Baffle House, she hears a fascinating legend. Lizzy’s family history is part of the mystique. She’s a descendant of Adam Canfield, who bought the property in 1859. He built themansion for his wife, Elizabeth, in 1860.

All went well until the Civil War when Adam was shot by Union soldiers. He’d housed a Confederate troop who were marching north to deliver a payroll. When they heard that enemy soldiers were headed their way, they hid the gold and escaped into the Everglades.Adam and his wife, Elizabeth, stood on the front porch and faced the Union troops. When Adam wouldn’t tell them where Captain Lowry had gone, they shot him.The coins were never recovered as Captain Lowry and his men failed to return.

Lizzy said people have tried to find the lost payroll, but the ghost of the White Lady chases them away. She believes Elizabeth is still there, searching for the gold so she can stave off the Union soldiers and save her husband. The secret of the missing treasure continues to baffle people to this day.

Where did I get the idea for this story?

My tale is based on a news article that related a true incident. Confederate soldiers led by Captain John Riley were transporting a million-dollar payroll to Fort Mead. They were followed by Union troops. Riley stated they buried $200,000 in gold coins and the rest in paper currency. They hid in the Everglades, but when they came back to retrieve the money, they couldn’t find it.

I added the ghost, and then I had to invent a reason for it. Hence the tragic history of Baffle House. Who wouldn’t sympathize with the ghost of a woman pining for her dead husband?

Maybe the victim found out where the stash was hidden, and he was killed for it. Or maybe the motive for murder had nothing to do with the gold coins. Lizzy isn’t being entirely truthful, either. She’s hiding something, and Marla needs to find out what it is. Regardless of what she learns, themissing treasureadds another element to the mystery.

Are you a fan of lost treasure stories? What’s your favorite movie in this genre?
