“We should warn you about Demi’s house,” Maddie called over her shoulder from the driver’s seat.
He shifted and lifted his head. “What’s wrong with it?”
“Nothing’s wrong with it.” Demi groaned, her ears turning red. “Come on, guys. That’s not nice.”
Liam glanced between the three friends, curiosity piqued.
After a moment of silence, Demi met his gaze in the rearview mirror. “My dad owns 15,000 puzzle books, 2,000 jigsaw puzzles, and 750 mechanical puzzles.”
“That’s almost 18,000 puzzle-related objects.” Liam’s eyes widened, and his jaw dropped. “Where does he store them all?”
“In our house.”
Demi’s flush spread from her ears to her neck. Was she embarrassed by the collection?
Liam stretched his aching legs. “Why don’t you sell most of it?”
Her jaw tightened, and she swiveled toward the window. Her friends fell silent. Awkwardness mushroomed in the already cramped car. He didn’t mean to hit a nerve. His suggestion seemed like a logical solution.
An iron gate topped with ugly gargoyle-type creatures appeared along the roadside. A gravel driveway snaked up the hill, and a Gothic mansion perched on the edge of the cliff. Six chimneys rose like spires, and the massive house loomed like a monolith against the night sky. A faint light from a third-story window cut through the shadows.
“What is that place? Some kind of resort?” Liam asked.
Bobby leaned across the middle seat. “That’s the Ives Mansion. Jacob Jasper Ives built it back in the late eighteen hundreds.”
“Does anyone live there now?”
“His granddaughter,” Maddie answered. “Lizette Ives. She’s an odd duck. Keeps to herself. No one’s ever seen her in town or knows what she looks like. Even the delivery drivers drop and run.”
“Maybe she’s trying to preserve her family legacy.” Demi’s voice zipped from the front seat. “ Wishes everyone would leave her alone.”
Liam squirmed. “I’m sorry my comment hurt you, Miss Kayne—uh, Demi. I live a very uncluttered life, and I admit I struggle to understand why people hold on to material possessions. But protecting a family legacy? That’s something I understand well.”
Demi scowled at him, her eyes narrowed. “Then you should understand why I can’t sell my dad’s things. They’re all I have left to remember him by until I find him, or he comes home.”
Liam’s chest tightened. He’d give everything to have his parents back. He lay his head against the leather headrest and closed his eyes. Would God take Alexis too? A warm tear slipped down his cheek. He bolted upright and brushed it away before the others noticed.
